After some confusion and a delay, Brian Vickers has officially signed a multi-year extension with Red Bull Racing. Vickers will continue to pilot the No. 83 with Ryan Pemberton as crew chief.
Jay Frye, Vice President and General Manager of RBR, said:
Brian has been here from the beginning and he continues to be a vital piece of the puzzle with regards to our ultimate goal of building Red Bull Racing into a consistent contender.
Vickers said:
This has been a long time coming, and there is no where else I would rather be. I am looking forward to building on what we have started the last couple of years.
Initially, it was reported in June that Vickers had re-signed with the team. But, last month, it was reported that Vickers was waiting to sign the contract extension. At the time Vickers said that a verbal agreement was reached but nothing had been signed.
In 2007, his first season with the team, he missed 13 races. Last season, he improved by making all the races and averaging a 20th-place finish. And, with his win in the Carfax 400, Vickers gave RBR its first win in Sprint Cup competition. He currently sits 13th in points, 12 points out of a Chase berth.
The improved performance obviously factored into the decision whether or not to keep Vickers.
