The Chicago Tribune is reporting that Joe Gibbs Racing may make a push for Juan Pablo Montoya next season to fill the seat that is rumored to be being vacated by Tony Stewart at the end of this season. The Winston Salem-Journal is also reporting the same thing.
Let’s all remember that Stewart has another year on his contract that JGR is expected to hold him to. But, if Stewart would be released, Montoya might be a decent alternative. When you consider who is out there this season, Montoya might be a hot commodity.
Don’t get me wrong, Stewart would be much more desirable in this situation. But, let’s just say that he leaves after the season. Who is available?
Dale Earnhardt Inc. has an option on Martin Truex Jr., so he probably won’t be available. Greg Biffle seems like he is going to re-sign with Roush Fenway Racing.
I think David Ragan’s contract is up at the end of the season, but I’m not sure. If it is, expect him to re-sign with Roush, given his performance. Ryan Newman might be available after this season. I think he might be a decent free agent for JGR to acquire, if he is looking to leave Penske Racing.
Dave Blaney’s contract is up this year. But, come on. (No offense to Blaney fans.)
I think JGR is looking for someone who can win. The J.J. Yeley experience is fresh in their memories. Although, one might ask how he would have performed behind the wheel of a JGR Toyota, with all of that horsepower.
But, when it comes down to it Stewart still has another year on his contract. And, JGR is expected to hold him to that. So, for those Montoya fans out there, don’t get your hopes up.
But, as this sport always teaches us, never say never.
